John R. Sinnock, the Mint’s chief sculptor-engraver at the time, was chosen to design the new half dollar. The obverse, or front, of the coin is based upon an 18th century bust by sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. It depicts Franklin in profile, facing right, with a gentle, bemused look on his face. The reverse displays a prominent Liberty Bell, based on a sketch by John Frederick Lewis, that, like Franklin, was closely tied in many American minds to the city of Philadelphia and the birth of the nation.
Despite their popularity, Franklin Half Dollars had a particularly short production run due to the decision by Congress in late 1963 to issue a new half dollar to memorialize the martyred president. They were minted in Philadelphia (no mintmark), San Francisco (“S” mintmark), and Denver (“D”), are composed of .90% silver yielding .36169 troy ounces of pure silver per coin, and measure 30.6mm in diameter.

Review by Jeffrey | April 6, 2012
My second purchase from PM, and definatly not the last! Purchased a roll of Ben F. halfs and could not be more satisfied with the smooth transaction. Coins were as expected for circulated coins and the price was very fair. Look forward to my next purchase!

Review by Marion | January 10, 2012

Good value
Review by Lawrence | January 9, 2012
I bought $10 face. All were worn with one or two having moderate to heavy wear, and one with light wear, and one had a small dent on the side. In all it was worth the price paid. Reasonably quick shipping (about 1 week). Will buy from them again.

New at buying Silver.
Review by Brandon | September 29, 2011
I placed an order for a Half Roll of Franklin's. I placed the order on the 23rd, I work at a bank, so I can see when everything comes out of my account. The payment came out the next day, and in a couple of days, they were at my doorstep. They were in a very protective envelope, and there was even a '48 in the bunch. I'll definitely be back again, for more Franklin's & next going for the Walking Liberty's. While Silver is down & you're thinking about getting coins, DO IT! Provident all the way!!

Great service and nice coins
Review by Fred762 | July 30, 2011
As in previous orders from Provident, the coins arrived in nice condition and are a decent value. They arrived via USPS in a timely manner. About 10% of them are a beautiful, mirror-like finish and appear to have been taken from mint sets!! WOW!!
Only one small complaint: this is the first time that a bag of 200 coins was taped up with lots of fiberglass strapping tape [to stop rattles I guess], making it necessary for me to actually cut the bag to get at the coins for inspection. I would pay a bit extra for them to be shipped in 10 tubes or similar...if that were an option! I will order in the future. -
Good service!!
Review by Fred762 | July 24, 2011
Received my order of $100 face value "franklins" recently.
Good quality, clean half dollar coins, with some with "mirror surfaces" which seem to have been taken from mint sets! Great service and only one minor complaint: the bag of 200 coins was 'sealed for shipping' with wrappings of fiberglass shipping tape which was difficult to remove, making it necessary to actually cut the bag to get the coins out for inspection. Not really a serious issue, but I suspect some would prefer to have the bag to store coins later. I would order again from Provident. -
Awesome

Worth the buy
Review by Frank | July 9, 2011
Buying for the amount of silver that is in the coin is worth it. They are also very nice looking coins. Few scratches but nothing to bad. These coins are cheap for what they are selling them for.

I've order these twice now - shipments were complete and prompt. Coins were in fine to UC grades. Much lower shipping fees than some other companies. Would recommend without reservation.

Great way to stack
Review by AW in Pennsylvania | May 17, 2011
I've been purchasing these from Provident for a while now, buying the same dollar amount every few weeks. The orders have arrived without any concerns or fuss, and its easy to track the order status here on the web site. The coins are great, with the occasional well worn coin offset by some really beautiful examples. I love the Franklin half! My last order came with a brilliant uncirculated 1948P mixed in - it's such fun to be treated this way, and it's why I keep coming back to this place for my silver needs. Thanks, Provident!

Great Company! Fast Ship! I have purchased from them again!
Review by CT | February 12, 2011
I placed an order for $14 face value of US Franklin Halves and $14 of mixed silver coins. I paid via Paypal linked to my checking account. My order went in around midnight.....by 8 am I received confirmation that my order was shipped. WOW! The coins were placed in a plastic bag, taped, packed in a brown envelope, covered with shipping peanuts...in a USPS flat rate shipping box that I had to sign for when it arrived. The Franklin Halves came as pictured on the web site. The $14 face value mixed coins were all dimes.....with the dates visible. I am impressed at how quickly they delivered my order. I have since placed a larger order for $100 face value and I will continue placing future orders through this company! Thank you Provident Metals!!!! You make buying coins over the internet hassle free!

very impressive
Review by Ron in Indianapolis | January 28, 2011
I found out about Provident on a blog I read from time to time and after looking at the website a few times, decided to give them a try for a small order of Franklin halves. Service was extremely prompt, each step of the process was confirmed in an email message, I always knew exactly what my order status was, and I was very pleased with the coins I received. The best thing I can say is that I've placed two additional orders and plan to place many, many more. You operate a terrific service, thank you.
