The obverse features the proud profile of President Benito Juarez, with the inscription “Venticinco Pesos” (25 pesos), “Ley 0.720” indicating the legal silver content, and “Mo 1972,” the mint mark for the Mexico City Mint and the year it was produced.
The reverse includes the Mexican seal, an image of an eagle eating a snake while perched on a prickly pear cactus. The inscription is “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” or “The United States of Mexico.”
Benito Juarez is a well-beloved figure in Mexican history. He served as president of Mexico five separate times and was known for resisting the Napoleonic invasion of his country and working to modernize Mexico. Several cities, including Ciudad Juarez near the United States border, are named in his honor, and Mexicans celebrate his birthday, March 21, as a national holiday.
