Are you looking to acquire a set of coins in brilliant uncirculated condition that are examples of each of the coins used in circulation in a given year? Then look no further than US Mint Sets! The coins are packaged in 2 sets of sealed cellophane packaging. The 1974 set includes 2 Eisenhower Dollars, which unlike 1973, were minted for both the Mint Sets and for general circulation. Provident Metals is offering the 1974 US Mint Set for purchase online right now.

Highlights:

  • Set ships in sealed cellophane packaging!
  • Set has thirteen 1974 coins from the US Mint!
  • The obverse and reverse designs are unique to each denomination.
  • The face value is displayed on each coin in US dollars.
  • Total of 1,975,981 mint sets were issued in 1974.
  • Please note some sets could be missing the outer envelope/sleeve/box.
  • Also note some sets might have packaging that is not in perfect condition.

There are 13 uncirculated coins, separated into 2 packages, in the 1974 US Mint Set. One package is from the Denver Mint, has 6 coins, and is identified by its red edging. It includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar. The second package, identified by its blue edging, has a total of 7 coins 6 from the Philadelphia Mint and 1 from the San Francisco Mint. This one includes one each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, Kennedy Half Dollar, and Eisenhower Dollar from the Philadelphia Mint plus one Lincoln Cent from the San Francisco Mint. This turned out to be the last year that any San Francisco Mint coins were included in the Mint Sets.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1974 Jefferson Nickel was created by Felix Schlag. It is a left-facing bust of President Thomas Jefferson that Schlag designed based upon a Gilbert Stuart portrait that Schlag had seen in an art book. In 1938, the Buffalo nickel had completed its mandatory 25-year circulation, and the US Mint decided to hold a contest to create a design to honor President Jefferson. Felix Schlag was the winning artist and received a $1,000 prize for his winning entry.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1974 Jefferson Nickel was also created by Felix Schlag, and features a front view of Jeffersons mansion, Monticello, near Charlottesville, Virginia. The Monticello was designed by Jefferson himself.

History

Mint Set sales during their inaugural year were 5,000 sets. Thanks to the growing interest in coin collecting, it only took 12 years for sales to zoom past the 100,000 mark for the first time, reaching 187,000 sets sold in 1959. And a mere 5 years later, in 1964, sales surpassed the 1 million mark. Sales of Mint Sets reached an all-time high to date of 2,750,000 sets in 1972, only to suffer an almost 1 million drop in sales in 1973. Sales of the 1974 Mint Sets started increasing again, reaching 1,767,691 sets. The cause of this massive drop in sales is felt to be the addition of the 2 Eisenhower Dollars to the Sets which resulted in the issue price increasing to $6.00.
