Beginning in the second century, Britannia came to epitomize a Roman goddess. The historic female figure is the protector of the islands and personifies strength and honor.
She first debuted on British coinage in 1672. More recently, the goddess was introduced on the Royal Mint’s Britannia series with a gold coin in 1987. Following its success, the mint issued a 1 oz silver coin in 1997. Since that date, even-numbered years depicted a standing Britannia as the reverse design, while all odd-numbered years have displayed a seated figure.
