The obverse of the coin is printed per tradition with a beautifully detailed bust of Queen Elizabeth II, the constitutional monarch of Canada and England for over 60 years. This makes hers the second longest reign in England’s monarchy and ensures her importance in history. Her diamond jubilee birthday was celebrated in 2012 making the 2012 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf noteworthy for that reason. The front of the coin is also inscribed with the words Elizabeth II across the top and clearly labeled 5 Dollars 2012 across the bottom. The reverse of the 2012 Gold Maple is detailed with the Canadian maple leaf, the symbol of Canada and recognized around the world.
