The obverse, or front of the coin, borows its design directly from one of the most beautiful coins in US history: the 1907 Double Eagle. Lady Liberty was designed by the famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and chosen by Theodore Roosevelt to symbolize the emerging power of the United States. Saint-Gaudens depicts a flowing Lady Liberty striding toward the viewer with the sun rising behind her, an olive branch in her left hand and a torch in her right. Emblazoned above her head is the word “Liberty.” The reverse side of the coin was designed by Miley Busiek, chief sculptor for the United States Mint and designed specifically for the American Eagle.
