For years, China has been able to sell the Gold Panda at a higher rate than the actual market rate of gold because of a pioneering and shrewd marketing strategy. They made a modern coin more collectible by simply capping its mintage every year and also changing its design annually. Gold Pandas are considered so precious by some that they are often set in rings, necklaces, and bracelets. The Chinese Gold Panda was first released in 1982 to such success that by 1987, the one-ounce 1982 Gold Pandas often sold for more than $3,000 each. China recognized the future potential of the coin and wasted no time capitalizing on its success. They introduced the same design as the Gold Panda in a silver Panda series the very next year. In fact, the Chinese Gold Panda became one of the most successful coins series of the 1980's. Offering excellent investment flexibility, the 2012 Gold Panda comes in five sizes of 99.9% pure gold: 1 Troy ounce, 1/2 Troy ounce, 1/4 Troy ounce, 1/10 Troy ounce, and 1/20 Troy ounce. Officially authorized by the Chinese Republic as a state coin, the 2012 Gold Panda can be used as legal tender in China even though they have never been intended for that use. Their market value in gold bullion far exceeds their face values of only 500 Yuan, 200 Yuan, 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, and 25 Yuan, respectively. Because they remain untendered, the Chinese Gold Pandas tend to retain their freshly minted, uncirculated state. Your 2012 Gold Panda will arrive to you in the Original Shenzen Guobao Mint Sealed plastic in mint condition.
The design of the 2012 Gold Panda follows in an proud lineage of precursers in their design, but each issue boasts a new design of the giant panda every year. The ancient Chinese nobility considered the Giant panda a rare and noble creature. So prized were these elusive bears that Emperor Wen is said to have buried his mother with the skull of her panda companion. They were often offered as gestures of good will to visiting royalty. Today, China still offers her pandas as unofficial diplomats to many countries around the world. Pandas are now protected as popular but endangered species, and the panda has become a beloved, unofficial national symbol of China. The reverse side of the Gold Panda features a new design of a generally playful panda living in her natural habitat: Sometimes she munches on her favorite food of bamboo, sometimes she can be seen watching over cubs, other times she is depicted sitting by the water’s edge, while she might also be seen walking through her forest home. In addition, the coin is often finished uniquely, making each issue a new surprise and adding to the anticipation of its release.
Per tradition, the design etched on the obverse side of the 2012 Gold Panda is always an intricate rendering of China’s ancient Temple of Heaven. The temple was constructed between 1406 and 1420 by the Youngle Emperor in order to celebrate the harvest of Winter Solstice. The Temple of Heaven was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organization in 1988. They described the design of the temple as "a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design.” We believe you will find the design and craftsmanship of the Gold Panda as much a masterpiece as the fine architecture that inspired it. The People’s Republic of China is inscribed across the top in the Chinese characters 中華人民共和國. The year of issue is also labeled across the bottom of the obverse. Each 1/20 ounce Gold Panda
weighs 1.5552 grams, measures 13.92mm in diameter and has a thickness of 0.83mm. We invite you to make the 2012 Gold Panda another fine addition to your gold bullion portfolio, and investors will appreciate that each Gold Panda will arrive in brilliant, uncirculated condition.
