The One Ounce Chinese Gold Panda was first issued in 1982, and by 1987, such was the demand by collectors that some of the one-ounce 1982 Gold Pandas were sold for more than three thousand dollars. After achieving such a resounding success with its first release, China realized the immense future potential of the Panda coin. Capitalizing on the significant popularity of the gold series, the Chinese Silver Panda series was introduced just one year later. The Chinese Gold Panda series eventually became one of the most successful bullion coins produced in the 1980's. Offering outstanding investment flexibility, the 2012 Gold Panda is struck in 99.9% pure gold and is offered in five sizes: 1 Troy ounce, 1/2 Troy ounce, 1/4 Troy ounce, 1/10 Troy ounce, and 1/20 Troy ounce. With stated face values far below their actual value in gold bullion at 500 Yuan, 200 Yuan, 100 Yuan, 50 Yuan, and 25 Yuan respectively, these coins were clearly never intended for general circulation event though they are legal tender in China. Therefore, these coins tend to retain their untouched, mint state over time and will likely only increase in value. Each 2012 Gold Panda will arrive in the Original Shenzen Guobao Mint Sealed plastic!
The design of the 1 oz 2012 Gold Panda follows an admirable lineage of beautiful predecessors and features a new strike of the beloved panda annually. Pandas were considered noble and rare creatures in ancient China, especially prized by China’s ruling class. Emperor Wen is said to have buried his mother with the skull of her beloved panda. Often, they were offered as gifts-of-state to foreign nobles as gestures of good will. Continuing this tradition, China still shares her pandas with many countries making the panda an unofficial diplomat around the world. Now fiercely protected as an endangered species, the panda has become an unofficial national symbol of China. The reverse of the Gold Panda features various versions of a playful panda in her natural habitat: sometimes watching over cubs, sometimes munching on bamboo, or sitting by the water’s edge, or walking through the forest. Each issue features a decisive variation in the design, and this makes each new issuance highly anticipated. The front of the One Ounce 2012 Gold Panda is equally beautiful. Per tradition, it is engraved with a detailed rendering of China’s prized Temple of Heaven. The temple was constructed between 1406 and 1420 during Emperor Youngle’s reign in order to celebrate the Harvest Ceremonies of the Winter Solstice. The temple was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational and Scientific Organization in 1988 who described it as "a masterpiece of architecture and landscape design.” The Gold Panda’s design is no less a masterpiece. In addition to the temple the Chinese characters 中華人民共和國 are beautifully inscribed across the top, meaning People's Republic of China, and the year of issue is also inscribed across the bottom. Each one ounce Gold Panda weighs 31.103 grams, measures 32.05mm in diameter and has a thickness of 2.70mm, making this a substantial piece of gold bullion. We are confident that you will find the 2012 Gold Panda as fine an addition to your gold bullion portfolio as its predecessors, and you can rest assured that yours will arrive in brilliant, uncirculated condition. The 2012 Chinese Gold Panda is an equally artistic way to diversify your investment portfolio or to add to your collection of fine coins.
