The 2012 Australian Platinum Platypus is the second coin in the Perth Mint’s Platypus series which originally debuted in 2011. The Platinum Platypus bears the legal tender value of $100 Australian dollars and was minted at the Australian Perth Mint. Each is struck in meticulous detail from one ounce of .9995 fine platinum. The 2012 Platypus weighs 31.12 grams, and is 32.60 mm in diameter, and boasts a thickness of 2.70 mm. The Platinum Platypus is an excellent example of the blast white properties of pure platinum with its frosted, luminous, bright white finish. The 2012 Platinum Platypus was also released with a limited mintage of only 30,000 coins but were so popular that they very quickly sold out. An addition, pure platinum bullion is an excellent way to diversify your portfolio while effectively hedging against inflation. The Perth Mint Spokesperson Matthew Holmes, stated about the coin’s popularity, “...... the Platypus has become a star in our bullion coin program."

The reverse of the 2012 Platinum Platypus was designed by Natasha Muhl featuring the majestic duck-billed platypus. These intriguing and delightful mammals are indigenous to Australia and quite unique as a species. The duck billed platypus has a tail similar to the North American beaver, webbed feet, a bill, and lays eggs; however this extremely unique creature is considered a mammal, has fur and nurses its young like other mammals. The reverse also features vegetation underwater from the rivers and lakes of Australia where the platypus is commonly found. Encircling the underwater Australian scene the reverse displays the words AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2012 1oz 9995 PLATINUM. Ian Rank-Broadley’s iconic depiction of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the 2012 Platinum Platypus as it does on many if not all the coins the Perth Mint releases. An inscription of the words “ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA and 100 DOLLARS can be found on the obverse of this beautiful coin surrounding the profile of the Queen. Collectors can appreciate its beauty and rarity having a guaranteed mintage of 30,000, and Investors can appreciate the same, as well as the fineness and purity of the 2012 Platinum Platypus Bullion Coin.

Customer Reviews

  1. Back for more!! This coin is a work of art. Review by mitchell | April 12, 2012

    This coin is special.
Besides its intrinsic value Worth the extra cost over a bulk 1 oz bar
1 troy oz isn't so bulky Very weighty NIce to hold. and admire
You have no doubt that it is of value

  2. One helluva coin Review by Chris | March 31, 2012

All pics I've seen on sites do no justice to this coin as you hold this beauty in your hand. Beautifully elegant with its white blasted background coupled with polished relief. Again Provident has exceeded my expectations in pricing and quality making them the only online metal business I deal with.
