2012 1 oz Silver Britannia Coin | Brilliant Uncirculated

Limited release 2012 Silver Britannia coins are now available for our fine silver bullion customers in brilliant, uncirculated condition! These beautiful British coins from across the pond represent the fine craftsmanship for which the Royal Mint is respected around the world. Each 2012 Silver Britannia is struck with one Troy ounce of pure Britannia Silver bullion (.958 fine) with a weight of 32.45 grams and a diameter of 40 mm in a denomination of two pounds. The intrinsic value of each coin in silver bullion is far greater than its stated face value, however. Each 2012 Silver Britannia represents not only a shrewd investment in silver bullion, but each has been designed with great care by England’s most skilled artisans.

The reverse of the 2012 coin re-creates the original depiction of Britannia sculpted by the Royal Mint’s famed designer, Philip Nathan. Nathan has designed many coins for the Royal Mint including a portrait to mark Queen Elizabeth’s and Prince Philip’s Golden Wedding Anniversary and the Royal Wedding crown of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. Nathan’s 2012 Britannia design portrays her as a standing figure in a flowing gown armed with a trident and shield. She is also wearing a Corinthian helmet as she was portrayed by Roman tradition. Britania, an ancient term for Great Britain, has always been personified by a female figure. Inspired by the 2nd Century Roman Britannia who was also personified as a goddess armed with a trident and shield, Nathan captures the classic Roman depiction in intricate detail in the 2012 Silver Britannia. The words, “Britannia 2012 One Ounce Fine Silver” are also clearly displayed across the top of the reverse side of each coin. In 1997 and in even-numbered years since, the reverse side has featured a standing Britannia. Beginning in 1999 and all odd-numbered years, a series of non-repeating designs of Britannia have replaced the standing figure. The obverse or front of the coin carries the now-famous bust of Her Majest Queen Elizabeth II sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley which has been used on commemorative British coins since 1998. The denomination of “2 POUNDS” also appears below her portrait on the obverse with the words ELIZABETH II across the top.
