The word TITANIC is inscribed below. The rim reads CANADA and FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR. It is marked with four nines to the left and right.
The obverse includes a portrait of Queen Elizabeth, with the words ELIZABETH II and 5 DOLLARS 2012 inscribed.
This coin was produced in honor of the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the famous ship. The passenger liner collided with an iceberg, ripping a hole in the side and leading to the deaths of more than 1,500 people. It remains the deadliest peacetime maritime disaster in modern history.
Within two hours after impact, the ship — the largest in the world at the time of its construction — made its way to the bottom of the sea. Tragically, it had not been outfitted with enough lifeboats, and the era’s safety protocols prevented the rescue of countless innocents.
