Minted since 1982, the Mexican Silver Libertad hails all the way from the Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest mint in North America. The mint’s name translates to mean “the House of Mexican Money,” and was established by the Spanish in 1535.
The 2013 Mexican Libertad contains 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver. Measuring 48mm in diameter, with a thickness of 4.5mm, the Libertad has a small mintage each year, making it popular among collectors and investors alike.
The obverse of each 2 Oz Libertad features a winged Angel of Independence, the beautiful symbol of Mexican sovereignty. Behind her are two volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
The reverse of each 2013 2 Oz Silver Libertad features an eagle with a snake in its mouth, hovering above a cactus. It is surrounded by several Mexican coat of arms from generations past.
The Legend of Princess Iztaccihuatl
According to legend, the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl Volcanoes hold the tomb of Princess Iztaccihuatl, who died during the Mexican War of Independence.
Similar to the story of Romeo and Juliet, the princess was in love with Popocatepetl, a warrior from an enemy tribe. Because of the conflict between their families, their love remained unrequited.
Like Juliet, Iztaccihuatl died of a broken heart after Popocatepetl went into battle. To this day, it is said that Popocatepetl vigilantly keeps watch over her grave at the peak of the mountain.

- nice coinRichardon 1/13/14
OverallI wanted a sample of Mexican silver for my collection, and this coin fit the bill. It has a beautiful design, and arrived in flawless condition. The solid satin finish lacks the definition of some of the other coins in my collection, but not for this I would have rated it 5 stars. Wish there was a 4.5 star option.
- Hefty, proof like coinThomason 11/7/13
OverallThis is a great coin. I originally wanted the one ounce but they were out of stock but I am well pleased with this coin. It is a very hefty, thick coin but it has that proof like white silver, satin finish which is quite nice. Great addition to my collection.
