The obverse of each 1 oz silver coin features a magnificent elephant as it rumbles through the rolling grasslands of Africa. The remarkable, complex design shows the animal with its trunk in the air with a bright moon in the distance. “AFRICAN WILDLIFE,” “ELEPHANT” and “1 oz Ag 999.9” are inscribed.
The Somalian Coat of Arms is shown on the reverse. “SOMALI REPUBLIC,” “2016” and “100 SHILLINGS” are engraved around the design.
The Bavarian State Mint, a trusted sovereign mint among Precious Metals investors and collectors (and the oldest company in Munich; has operated since the 12th century), has manufactured the Somalian Elephant annually since 2004. The mint has exclusive production rights to the elephant coins, which are backed by the Somali government, and can be used as legal tender. The coins have grown in popularity since 2004, moving from 5,000 in its first year of release to around 130,000 now.

I believe this may be a matter of personal taste. There is a lot of numisamtic potential here, in that the series is low in number and the designs change."

When I received the coin it was bright, shiny and beautiful. I love the elephant series. I love the 2016 coin itself. But then again I loved it when it was released in 2009. I love the elephant coins so I’m giving it 5 stars. Provident is an excellent company to work with.
I am disappointed with the Mint. This same design was used on the 2009 coin. The only differences are, the elephant is facing the opposite direction and they moved the sun/moon to rest in front of the elephant instead of it rising from behind the trees at the bottom. The elephant, grass and trees are all the same on both 2016 and 2009 coins. All the same wrinkles, tusk, ears, grass blades and trees. I just hope the Mint hasn’t run out of wonderful Elephant designs to keep this wonderful series going. Disappointed! It feels like a last minute change was made to an old design and they called it a new year. I guess we will see what happens with 2017!
