Produced by the Perth Mint, the Australian Gold Kangaroo is one of the most popular coins issued by the mint. Founded in 1896, the Perth Mint was the third oldest mint in Australia, trailing behind the Sydney Mint (f. 1855) and the Melbourne mint (f. 1872). However, both mints no longer operate, making the Perth Mint the oldest. The Perth Mint was under British jurisdiction until 1970. Today it is owned and operated by the Australian government.
Every Australian Kangaroo contains 1/10 oz. of .9999 pure gold bullion. It measures approximately 16 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness with a face value of $15.
Similar to the other Gold Kangaroos and Nuggets produced by the Perth Mint, the obverse side of the 1/10 oz. coin displays an image of Queen Elizabeth II, the present-day monarch of Australia. The words “Elizabeth II,” “Australia” and “15 Dollars” are included on the outer rim of the coin.
The reverse features the unofficial symbol of Australia, the kangaroo. An important part of Australian culture, the kangaroo is featured on most Australian currency, as well as the coat of arms. In addition, it is an emblem for many sports teams and clubs. Along with the kangaroo, “Australian Kangaroo,” “1/10 oz.,” “.9999 Gold” and the year of mintage are also engraved on the outer edge of the coin.
The unique artistry and high-quality of each Australian Kangaroo produced by the historic Perth Mint make it an advantageous investment that is guaranteed to diversify any collection or portfolio. I ordered 2 coins. Received 1990 and 1996 coins. They are different coins and capsulated in hard square plastic for protection. It's really a treat. Nice coin, fun to look at, cute, and so on..... One is almost 1/4 century old and other one is 18 years old. I am sure the coins have some stories to tell...
What will you get when you order one? Well, order one and see!
