Used as legal tender in Australia, the Gold Nugget has two distinct features: the first being its two-toned, frosted effect, and the second being the hard, plastic encapsulation that each coin possesses. The Perth Mint issued a one tonne gold coin in 2011, breaking the record for the largest, most valuable coin in the world.
The oz. Australian Nugget is comprised of .999 gold, with a face value of $50. It measures approximately 25 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The Nuggets are one of the few coins in the world to annually change their designs. Each year elicits original engravings.
The obverse side of the coin depicts an image of Queen Elizabeth II, who is Australia’s present-day monarch. The words “Elizabeth II,” “50 Dollars” and “Australia” encircle the outer rim of the coin. The reverse side features the kangaroo, the unofficial symbol of Australia that is displayed on other Australian currency as well as on the coat of arms. The kangaroo is always present on the back of the coin, although the rural habitat set behind it often varies. The words “Australian Kangaroo” rim the top half of the coin, while “1/2 oz.” and “.999 Gold” border the bottom.
