The Chamber of Mines established the Rand Refinery in 1920 to refine all of the mined gold in South Africa. Since operations commenced, the company has refined roughly 50,000 tons of gold, or about a third of the world’s mined gold.

Rand Refinery supplies all of the gold manufactured by the South African Mint Company, who by law is the only company to produce legal tender coins in South Africa, like the famous Kruggerand. The refinery is the exclusive supplier of coin blanks used to create the South African Gold Kruggerands, one of the most popular and widely-traded coins in the world.
