Australian Silver Coins

Australian Silver Coins at Provident Metals

The Perth Mint is one of the world’s most well-known minting facilities. They’re known for their array of gold and silver bullion products, including their several silver annual bullion coin programs. While most annual coin programs retain the same imagery year after year, the Perth Mint is known for changing the designs with every issue. Learn more about these Australian Silver Coins, right here at Provident Metals.

Annual Bullion Series

The Perth Mint has several iconic silver bullion coin programs that continue to captivate collectors and investors. These include the following:

  • Australian Emu Silver Coins: This annual coin series got its start in 2018 and has been released every year since. Coins are issued in a 1 oz size and every issue displays a unique emu on the reverse.
  • Australian Kangaroo Silver Coins:  This series started in 2016 and was the first Perth Mint coin program to have a purity of .9999 pure silver. Unlike other Perth Mint collections, this series features the same image of a Kangaroo with every issue.
  • Australian Koala Silver Coins: This collection of silver coins debuted in 2007 and features unique images of koalas on the reverse with every issue. Coins are released in a 1 oz size and as of 2018, now feature a purity of .9999 pure silver.
  • Australian Kookaburra Silver Coins: The Kookaburra series started in 1990 and is the longest-running silver coin from the Perth Mint. These coins have been issued annually ever since in just a 1 oz weight. Similar to the Australian Koala Silver Coin series, these coins display a new image of the popular bird species on each release.

These coins are named after the incredible creatures that are featured on the reverse. The obverse of these coins showcases the reigning British monarch. The Perth Mint has used different variations of Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy over the years such as Ian Rank-Broadley’s famous depiction and even Jody Clark’s in recent years. In 2024, the Perth Mint will be using the effigy of King Charles III on the obverse of their annual bullion coinage. This new image was created by Dan Thorne. This will be the first time in all of these annual bullion series that someone other than the Queen will be seen on the obverse field.

Other Popular Coins

  • Lunar Series: One of the Perth Mint’s most popular line of coins is their Lunar series, based on the Chinese zodiac. Lunar Series I launched in 1996 with gold coins. Silver coins were issued in 1999 with the Year of the Rabbit and ran until 2010 with the Year of the Tiger. Lunar Series II kicked off in 2008, overlapping with Lunar Series I. Lunar Series III debuted in 2020. This series showcases iconic images of the Chinese zodiac animals on the reverse. This series releases coins in BU, gilded, colorized, and proof variations.
  • Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series: This collection debuted in 2014 with, for the most part, unique images of the bird on each issue. These coins have a lower mintage cap than most of the Perth Mint’s releases. These coins are designed by John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the US Mint.
