The $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle gold pieces introduced in 1840 shared a design with the new Eagles of 1838 and the Half Eagles of 1839, continuing the United States Mint’s tradition of creating uniformity among the nation’s coinage. The Half Eagles’ obverse (front) depicts a left-facing bust of Liberty, her hair knotted in back with loosely cascading curls and wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty”. She is encircled by thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies, and each coin is dated on the front with its year of issue. The reverse design features an American eagle, wings spread for flight, with a shield across its breast.
$2 1/2 Liberty Head Quarter Eagles were minted in two slight variations from 1840 through 1907 in Philadelphia (no mintmark), San Francisco (S), Charlotte, North Carolina (C), Dahlonega, Georgia (D), and New Orleans (O) and are composed of .90% gold yielding .12094 troy ounces of pure gold per coin and measuring 18mm in diameter.
