Although Modern US Commemoratives are considered legal tender, they are not released for general circulation. Likewise, each coin is minted in limited quantities--making them increasingly collectible and valued. Not only do Commemoratives honor great figures and events in American history, each coin raises money to benefit a host of causes--for instance, toward maintaining and restoring George Washington’s historic home.
From 1892 - 1954, the US Mint generated 50 Silver Commemoratives to honor momentous American events. Generally listed as the first Commemorative Coin was the 1892 Half Dollar, celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to America.
After 1954, the US Mint did not produce a Commemorative Coin for nearly 30 years. In 1982, the George Washington Half Dollar was released to celebrate the 250th birthday of the nation’s first president--making it the first Modern US Commemorative. Annually thereafter, the US Mint continued to produce Commemoratives in the denominations of Clad Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, $5 Gold Coins and $10 Gold Coins. Commemoratives are generally struck as Satin Finish Uncirculated Coins or Proofs.
At Provident Metals, we carry a variety of US Commemoratives: George Washington Silver Half Dollars, National Community Service Silver Dollars, Benjamin Franklin Coin and Chronicles Set, Korean War Proof Silver Dollars, Olympic Proof Silver Dollars, Robert Kennedy Proof Silver Dollars, Yellowstone National Park Proof Silver Dollars, United States Veterans Three-Coin Sets, $10 Gold Modern Commemoratives and many more.
