The LIberty Head Nickel, sometimes referred to as the V Nickel for its reverse design, is a United States five-cent piece minted from 1883 - 1912. Famed Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, Charles Barber, designed the Liberty Head that appears on the obverse (front) of the nickel. Here, Lady LIberty is pictured in a classic Roman profile facing west wearing a headband inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” She is surrounded by thirteen stars representing the thirteen original colonies, and the date of issue is clearly marked across the bottom. The reverse design features the Roman Numeral V for five cents, and the V is encircled by a laurel wreath with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” across the top and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” inscribed across the bottom of each coin.
