Silver Proof Sets from 1992-1998 by the US Mint
1992-1998 Silver Proof Sets: Great Start to a Stellar Collection
The 1992 - 1998 Silver Proof Sets available at Provident Metals include a Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter, Roosevelt Dime, Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Penny. Each handsome set arrives in its original US Mint-issued packaging--a simple, affordable way to start a collection or purchase a gift.
In 1936, the US Mint released its first proof sets aimed at collectors. Yet though the Mint had been manufacturing proof coins for nearly 150 years, the first Silver Proof Set was not released until 1950. The Mint soon suspended production, but in 1992, it resumed issuing Silver Proof Sets, and has done so annually thereafter.
Silver Proof Sets are distinguished by their sharp, mirror-like surfaces and highly detailed edgings. To create these stunning cameo-like designs, each coin blank is impeccably polished and cleaned, then fed into a press fashioned with hand-polished dies. They are then struck twice to produce frosted images that make a striking contrast against their reflective field.
Minted in San Francisco, the coins included in proof sets vary by year because the coins produced in any given year often varies. In addition to annual Clad Proof Coins, the US Mint produces Silver and Premier Silver Proof Coins. These sets therefore contain standard-issue coins, with the Half Dollar, Quarter and Dime made of 90% Pure Silver.
