Barber Quarters--also known as Liberty Heads--were named after Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber (b 1840 – 1917), designer of the Barber half dollar, quarter, dime and Liberty Nickel. Inspired by Greek, Roman and 19th century French coinage, Barber’s designs are distinguishable by Lady Liberty with her cap and wreath, flanked by 13 emblematic stars.
On the reverse of each Liberty Head Quarter is the iconic American eagle, which closely resembles the Great Seal of the United States. The Barber Quarters available at Provident Metals each contain .715 Troy Ounces of 90% Pure Silver, with dates ranging from 1892 - 1916.
In 1887, Mint Director James P. Kimball made a request of Congress that minor silver coinage be redesigned. He proposed that eminent contemporary artists compete to create the winning design, and three years later, the United States Department of the Treasury asked a handful of respected artists to submit proposals for the design. Yet after the artists made unrealistic financial demands, plans changed, and the contest was opened to the public. After a series of dismal public designs, the task was reassigned to Barber, whose Liberty designs were put into production in 1892.
