Discover America’s first commemorative coin — the Columbian Exposition Silver Half Dollar — produced by the Bureau of the Mint in 1892 and 1893. The coin was released to the public to raise money for the World’s Columbian Exposition.
Each piece contains .36169 troy ounces of .90 silver and comes in cull condition, meaning the coins may be highly worn, damaged, bent or bear other major imperfections.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Christopher Columbus — the first American coin to portray a historical person. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR are inscribed.
The Santa Maria floats above two hemispheres on the reverse. The year 1492 flanks the design, along with the inscriptions WORLD’S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION, CHICAGO and the date. The design pays homage to Columbus’ initial voyage to the Americas.
George T. Morgan modified the designs after initial concepts by Olin Levi Warner.
Around 5 million coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, but many were melted because the coins outnumbered demand. Two million were circulated until the 1950s.
