The obverse of the Don’t Tread on Me round features a hissing coiled rattlesnake, ready to defend its territory. The rim reads DON’T TREAD ON ME and ESTABLISHED IN 1754.
The reverse depicts a fearsome eagle, wings spread as it prepares to take flight. It stands on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch nearby. Below, a banner reads ETERNAL VIGILANCE. The top rim reads THE PRICE OF LIBERTY and the bottom reads 1 oz .999 FINE SILVER.
The snake and accompanying phrase comes from the iconic Gadsden flag. This yellow flag was designed by American general Christopher Gadsden during the American revolution. The rattlesnake as a symbol of the American colonies came from Benjamin Franklin, who suggested the British be thanked with a gift of rattlesnakes. The phrase “Don’t Tread on Me” was first used by Marines enlisted by the Second Continental Congress. All combined, these are powerful symbols of American heritage.
