Captivating the world for more than 200 years, the enthralling nature of Australia’s history hardly excludes its minting of coins. During the last decade of the nineteenth century, rich gold deposits were discovered in Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Western Australia soon found itself in the midst of a gold rush and, to avoid shipping the precious metal back and forth from London, the need for a mint was soon apparent.

Sir John Forrest, the first Premier of Western Australia, recognized the significance of gold bullion on the economy and began tirelessly lobbying for a branch of the British Royal Mint in Perth. Soon thereafter, Forrest’s dream was realized with the opening of the Perth Mint in 1899. The mint manufactured gold and silver sovereigns until the gold standard was abandoned by Great Britain in 1931. It went on to produce millions of pennies, shillings and later, cent coins. The mint remained under British ownership until July of 1970, when it was transferred to the Western Australian Government.

Today, the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series of coins, which made their initial debut in 1999, followed by the Lunar Series II in 2008, pay homage to the Chinese Zodiac Lunar Calendar. With designs changing annually and their weights and purity guaranteed by the Australian Government, the series has proven popular among investors and collectors alike. Provident Metals carries a wide range of Lunar coins, including the highly sought-after Year of the Dragon (also available in a limited-release colorized design), along with the Tiger, Mouse and gold Year of the Ox, to name but a few.

Celebrating Australia would hardly be complete without mentioning its many fascinating animal species. Provident Metals carries several coins commemorating Australian wildlife, including the Perth Mint’s ongoing Koala and Kookaburra series. Both the Koala (a marsupial native only to Australia) and the Kookaburra (known as the tenacious little songbird) are hailed as Australian national treasures. Collectors eagerly await the introduction of the new Koala and Kookaburra coin designs each year.
