The Royal Canadian Mint, or Monnaie Royale Canadienne as it is known in French, is the Crown Corporation that mints all of the country’s circulation coins. It is the only mint on earth to issue commemorative coins in a .9999 fineness, while also striking medals, bullion coins, medallions and even tokens. It provides gold and silver assay and refinery services and runs a highly-advanced technical refinery.In 1858, Canadian coins were struck across the world in London. As the country’s population boomed, the demand for coinage also grew, and in 1901, a branch of Great Britain’s Royal Mint was constructed in Ottawa. At the onset of the Great Depression, the mint desired autonomy, and in 1931 it parted from Great Britain, becoming the newly-independent Royal Canadian Mint. It remains so to this day.
