The Giant Panda’s striking coloring makes it the embodiment of the Yin and Yang, an idea deeply rooted in Chinese culture. The black and white contrasting forces of nature, when balanced, symbolize harmony, goodwill and even luck. Therefore, China has endowed several countries, including the United States, with a gift of a live Panda as an expression of friendship, prosperity and peace.
As a result of habitat loss and low birthrates, the revered Panda is an endangered species, with fewer than 2000 living in the wild today. Despite its distinction as a national treasure and its revered history as a symbol of strength and endurance, the Giant Panda has assumed near obscurity in ancient Chinese art. There are few, if any, artistic depictions prior to the twentieth century. This makes the Chinese Gold and Silver Panda an even more exciting piece of Chinese--and likewise world--history.
On the obverse of each beautiful Chinese coin is the depiction of the Temple of Heaven, one of the world’s most commendable architectural feats. Built between 1406 and 1420, the Temple of Heaven was engineered during Emperor Yongle’s reign to commemorate the Winter Solstice. More than 550 years later, the temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
