The Indian Head design first appeared on the Buffalo Nickel. James Earl Fraser was commissioned to design an American coin that captured to beauty and nobility of the American West. Fraser sculpted an American bison on the reverse, and the profile of a Native American on the obverse. This copper bar features the left-facing profile of Fraser’s Native American chief.
