A broad-antlered moose stares out at the viewer on the reverse. It stands in tall grass, alert for predators — though the large moose has little to fear in the wild. CANADA arches over the top rim of the coin, and the words FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR circle the bottom. Just below the moose’s dewlap and nose is 9999.
The obverse features a portrait of the Queen. The words ELIZABETH II and 5 DOLLARS 2012 are engraved near the rim.
Moose are the largest deer species in North America, weighing up to 1,500 pounds and standing between 5 and 7 feet tall at the shoulder — with a great deal more height when you factor in the large antlers that grow in every year.
