The Silver Certificates were representative money printed from 1878 to 1964 redeemable for silver bullion. One side features a portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, and the top of the certificate reads “THIS CERTIFIES THAT THERE IS A DEPOSIT IN THE TREASURY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The lower portion of the certificate says “FIVE DOLLARS IN SILVER PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND.”
The reverse features the Lincoln Memorial and the words “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE DOLLARS.” It is signed by W.A. Julian and Henry Morgenthau, Jr., the 28th Treasurer of the U.S. and the Secretary of the Treasury, respectively.
Unfortunately, the Silver Certificates are no longer redeemable for silver bullion or coins as of 1968, but remain legal tender.
