History

George T. Morgan designed this Silver Dollar while serving under William Barber as Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint. Previously, Morgan was employed by the Royal Mint, where he enjoyed a stellar reputation. But the U.S. Mint ultimately convinced Morgan to join their team just in time for the nations production of a new Silver Dollar. Morgan was tasked with the designs, and once they were approved by director Henry Linderman, the coin went into production in 1878.
