Claude M. Johnson of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, its chief, ordered the new designs for the silver certificates in the United States in 1896. The US silver certificates were produced by the United States Treasury with the Educational Series running from 1896 to 1899. The most popular design to come from the series was $2 (USD) denomination. The overall Educational Series was often referred to as History Instructing Youth, even though that name applied specifically to the $1 (USD) denomination.

Obverse

The only design field with imagery on the 1/10 Gram Gold 2017 Aurum Educational Restrike Notes is that of Science on the obverse. The image features Science in the center as the more mature figure. She is introducing two young children, Steam and Electricity, to the young adults of Commerce and Manufacture. Inscriptions include Not Legal Tender and US and International Patents Pending. There are date marks on either side of the design as 2017, with ornate designs swooping around the figures in the center. 100 Milligrams is inscribed in the upper corners of the gold note, with DORO in the center of the design at the top of the field. The lower fields include 1/10^th Gram. Each one of the figures has photo-realistic, full-color displays of the figures.

History

The United States Treasury issued only three designs into circulation in the Educational Series of silver certificates. The $1, $2, and $5 denominations were the only planned images actually released, with $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1,000 denominations never issued. Designs were never developed for the unreleased denominations, except the $10 and $50 (USD) notes.

In the original $2 1896 Educational Series Gold Notes, E.H. Blashfield designed the Science, Steam, Electricity, Commerce, and Manufacture figures. Thomas F. Morris designed the frame and background images with George F.C. Smillie engraving the images. The original $2 (USD) silver certificate featured Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse on the other side.
