History

These Liberty gold notes are inspired by the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin design by Augustus Saint Gaudens. Gaudens was commissioned to create this coin design by his good friend, President Theodore Roosevelt. Following the Civil War, America was changing thanks to new technologies and an influx of immigrants from overseas. Roosevelt wanted American culture to develop along with these changes. A piece of this project involved updating what he saw as the dire state of American coinage. After conversing with Gaudens, development began on three new coin designs: the $10 Indian Head, the $20 Liberty, and the $20 Double Eagle.
