History

The Statue of Freedom is a bronze sculpture nearly 20 feet high with a weight of about 15,000 pounds. The statue originated in blueprints for the Capitol dome by Thomas Walter. While a depiction of Lady Liberty was initially proposed, sculptor Thomas Crawford ultimately chose the allegorical figure of freedom instead. One of the more unique aspects of the statue is the female figures military helmet, featuring feathers and an eagle. As such, many interpret the statue as a depiction of a Native American figure.
