In 2016, KOMSCO released the South Korean Tiger Series of gold bullion medals. The series features coins in four weights. The smallest of the series is the 1/10 oz gold medal. Today, you can get the 1/10oz Gold 2018 South Korean Tiger Medal in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition in an assay from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Ships in a protective assay card package!
  • 3rd release in the South Korean Tiger Series of gold medals!
  • Mintage limited to just 5,000 medals!
  • Each medal contains 1/10 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Obverse bears the image of a Korean tiger.
  • Reverse image showcases the Korean peninsula.

The South Korean Tiger Series features medals in both gold and silver. A variety of weights are available. Each medal features an image of the Korean tiger, which is called the Siberian tiger in other parts of the world. These beasts were once the largest living tiger species; however, they are now smaller due to scare food sources as illegal hunting practices when larger tigers come into contact with humans.

Obverse

The obverse of each 1/10oz Gold 2018 South Korean Tiger Medal bears the image of a tiger quietly stalking its prey from behind a wall of bamboo. On this side of the coin, you will see the weight, year of issue, and the name Korean Tiger engraved into the metal.

While these big cats once roamed the southernmost part of the Korean peninsula, they are now only found in Eastern Russia and northeastern China.

Reverse

On the reverse side of these medals, you will see the image of the Korean peninsula in a stylized design. This rendition shows the entire peninsula with no designation between the North and South. The letters of the shared Korean alphabet are used to form the shape of the landmass in this unique design.

History

The tigers featured on this coin are referred to as Korean tigers. These tigers have been called many different names over the course of history depending on the region in which they were spotted. A few of the other names for Korean tigers include Manchurian tiger, Amur tiger, and Ussurian tiger. The last time a Korean tiger was seen in the wild was in 1922 near Mount Daeduk.
