Highlights:
The combination of the members of the Zi:Sin, or 12 Guardians, in the background field of the reverse design for these 2021 Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals is a unique addition. The 12 Guardians have their own series at KOMSCO, known as the Zi:Sin, but these warriors are also said in Korean mythology to fight alongside Chiwoo Cheonwang and his armies in defense of the mortal world.
Obverse
On the obverse 1 oz Gold 2021 Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals, you will find a depiction of Do ggae bi. This grotesque figure is rumored to have the power to ward off evil spirits and was once hung from the homes of Koreans to fulfill just such a duty. This new depiction of Do ggae bi was introduced in 2020, offering a slightly different take on the figure. The inscriptions on this side include 1/10 CLAY, KOMSCO, 2021 FINE GOLD 999, and REPUBLIC OF KOREA.
Reverse
The reverse side of the Gold 2021 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Medal features a new image of Chiwoo. As he prepares for the next fight he must take on, you can see that the 12 Guardians are with him in the background field. The lone inscription on this face of the medal reads CHIWOO CHEONWANG.
History
The Chiwoo Cheonwang Series has been available since 2016. The medals are offered in 1 oz silver, 1 oz gold, and 1/10 oz gold as the primary options, though other silver weights have been added in recent years.
Ordering
These 1/10 oz Gold 2021 South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Medals are available sealed in individual blistercards. The cards have all the assay information for each coin, including a unique serial number. The red assay card is available for just 100 of the 400 medals issued in total in 2021, with the other 300 medals issued in three separate batches of 100 medals, each in a different card color.
