History

Prior to the Declaration, colonists were largely interested in retaining rights while under the rule of Britain. The Declaration radically shifted the focus to a complete removal of the British government in favor of an independent, self-governing nation. With an initial draft by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration received a positive vote by the Continental Congress on July 2 before being officially adopted two days later. The signing of the document would then occur the following month.
