Design

The 1/2 Gold Florida Goldback Note showcases a tribute to Floridas exploration history. On the note, a young woman dressed in traditional Spanish Conquistador armor kneels beside a fountain, her helmet resting nearby. She holds water from the mythical Fountain of Youth, a symbol tied to the states historical narratives.

History

In 1513, Juan Ponce de Len arrived on the coast of Florida during Pascua Florida (the Easter season), naming the region La Florida for its flowers and seasonal timing. While he is often associated with the search for the Fountain of Youth, his primary mission was expanding Spanish influence. His brief initial expedition gave way to a later attempt to colonize Florida, but it ended tragically with his death during a conflict with native peoples.
