Goldbacks are a privately issued form of voluntary local currency made using a thin layer of 24-karat gold sealed between protective polyester sheets. Each note contains a precise fractional amount of physical gold along with detailed artwork. Because of this design, Goldbacks are one of the few modern examples of small-denomination gold currency that can circulate for everyday use. The program first began in Utah and has since expanded to include several other states, pairing the lasting value of gold with the practicality of a note. Idaho now joins the series, with each denomination reflecting the states culture, history, and landscape. Currently, 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note Sets are available online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Notes arrive bundled together by multiples of 100!
  • Distinctive design for the Idaho series!
  • Depiction of Pietas on the reverse!
  • Contains 1/2000 troy oz of .9999 pure gold per note (1/20 troy oz total).
  • The design honors Sacagawea as the embodiment of Pietas.
  • Please bear in mind that Goldbacks are NOT US legal tender.
  • UV enhancements and other advanced security features included.

These 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note Sets are packaged in bundles containing 100 notes. Each note includes modern security measures to help verify authenticity and quality. These features include ultraviolet-responsive design elements, detailed micro-printing, and a unique serial number printed on every note.

Design

For the design of the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, the virtue of Pietas is represented with imagery inspired by Sacagawea. Sacagawea was a Lemhi Shoshone woman who assisted the Lewis and Clark Expedition as both a guide and interpreter. She was born around 1788 in the Lemhi Valley near what is now Salmon, Idaho. As a child, she was captured by Hidatsa raiders and later lived among the Mandan people in present-day North Dakota. When the Corps of Discovery traveled through the Idaho region in 1805, Sacagaweas knowledge of the area, her communication with the Shoshone people, and her steady support helped the expedition navigate the region successfully.

History

In Roman culture, Pietas represented one of the most valued virtues. It was often shown as a composed female figure symbolizing loyalty and responsibility toward the gods, family, and the state. Traditional depictions sometimes include a stork, which symbolized family devotion, or a patera used for ritual offerings. In some artworks, a swallow or small altar also appears nearby. More broadly, the concept of pietas reflected the idea that individuals should honor their responsibilities to others, their communities, and the divine.
