Presidents have a tough job, but they don’t stand alone. Their first ladies frequently help keep Washington, and their husbands, moving in the right direction. They also have raised presidential children and taken on pet projects, such as funding libraries or working with the Red Cross.

The ounce First Spouse $10 gold coin series honors this behind-the-scenes work that has fundamentally shaped our nation.

  • Martha Washington was famously shy about her role as first spouse, but was nevertheless considered a hero for her work providing financial support to Revolutionary War veterans.
  • Abigail Adams was a fierce woman who took an active role in politics, advocating for women’s rights and the end to slavery. Her letters with her husband, President John Adams, provide an interesting “back door” look at the inner workings of the presidency.
  • Dolley Madison, sometimes known as the “first” first lady, defined the role of first lady with her weekly socials at the White House. She was an adept politician and social manager who fostered an increased level of bipartisanship at the White House.
  • Edith Wilson was the confident and close ally to her husband Woodrow during World War I. When the president was temporarily incapacitated by a stroke in 1919, she managed his affairs–including running the country–until he recovered.
  • Each of the many first spouses who accompanied the President to the White House had her own achievements. Honor that with the First Spouse gold coin.

In this Our Choice collection, each of the gold coins is .9999 fine gold and weighs ounce. The face value is $10.
