Obverse
A tiger cub is shown in the obverse design of the 1/2 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Tiger. The tiger cub is shown as it rests across the famous gate of the Gyeongbokgung Palace near Seoul. The palace was the seat of power for the Joseon Dynasty that ruled the Korean peninsula from 1392 to 1897. Nearby, the Namsan Tower is featured, a modern structure that was built in 1971 on Namsan Mountain in central Seoul and is situated at the second-highest point in the city. Inscriptions on this face of the gold medal include 1/2 oz, Korean Tiger 2020, Seoul, and a tiger paw print.
Reverse
The Korean peninsula is featured on the reverse side of 1/2 oz Gold 2020 South Korean Tigers. The design of the peninsula is not a geographic or geopolitical rendition of the peninsula, but rather, one that forms the shape of the peninsula using the letters of the Hangul. The Hangul is the Korean alphabet. The inscriptions on this side of the medal read Republic of Korea and Fine Gold 999. The background behind the design elements on this side is that of tiger stripes, which are most visible around the rim of the design element.
History
The South Korean Tigers debuted in gold in 2016, with expansion coming in 2018 with the introduction of a silver medal. The designs have changed on the obverse field each year. The 2020 design is a departure from the other designs, offering a renewed glance at the tiger as a young cub. Further symbolizing renewal and rebirth, the Namsan Tower has blooming azaleas and forsythias.
