The S.S. Tilawa was a British-Indian passenger and cargo ship that met a tragic end during World War II. On November 23, 1942, while en route from Bombay to Durban, South Africa, the ship was struck by a Japanese submarine’s torpedo. The attack took place in the Indian Ocean, roughly 930 miles northeast of the Seychelles, sending the ship and its cargo, including silver bullion, to the ocean floor. Now, you have the opportunity to collect silver bullion refined from the silver recovered from this historic wreck. The 1/2 oz Silver S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Voyage Round is available now at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1/2 oz Silver S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Voyage Round is made from silver recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa, which rested on the ocean floor for more than 70 years. These rounds are carefully packaged in plastic flips, tubes of 20, or boxes of 500 to ensure their protection.
Obverse
The obverse of the Silver S.S. Tilawa Round features a detailed design of the ship navigating its final route across the Indian Ocean, with a nautical chart showing the path from Bombay to Durban in the background. The inscriptions include BOMBAY TO DURBAN and 1/2 OZ .999 FINE SILVER.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1/2 oz Silver S.S. Tilawa Round honors the ships long history. Built in 1924, the Tilawa was originally a passenger vessel for the British India Steam Navigation Company before being repurposed by the Royal Navy during World War II to transport troops and cargo. Inscriptions here include SS TILAWA.
History
In 2017, a salvage operation by Argentum Exploration Ltd. successfully recovered the silver cargo from the Tilawa. Using advanced underwater robotics, the team located the wreck at a depth of around 9,200 feet and carefully recovered the silver bars for refinement.
