Referred to as the “Indian Titanic,” the SS Tilawa was tragically sunk by Japanese torpedoes during World War II while en route from Bombay to Durban. Along with the tragic loss of lives, 2,364 silver bars went down with the ship into the Indian Ocean. After resting underwater for decades, about 60 tons of silver were recovered in 2017. Obverse

The obverse design of the 1/2 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds highlights the final journey of the ship. From a birds-eye view, the SS Tilawa is shown sailing across the Indian Ocean, with a map charting its voyage from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa. The inscriptions here read BOMBAY TO DURBAN and 1/2 OZ .999 FINE SILVER.

Reverse

On the reverse, the ship is shown peacefully cruising through calm waters, commemorating its original purpose as a passenger liner for the British India Steam Navigation Company. The SS Tilawa, built in 1924, was later pressed into service as a troop and cargo ship during World War II before being sunk in 1942. Inscriptions here read SS TILAWA.
