Goldbacks are privately produced notes intended for use as a voluntary local currency. Each note is crafted from a very thin layer of 24-karat gold sealed between protective sheets of polymer. This process creates a flexible note that contains a precisely measured amount of real gold. Goldbacks offer a modern way to use precious metals in small, spendable increments while still holding intrinsic value. The concept first launched in Utah and has steadily expanded into other participating states. With the introduction of the Idaho Goldback series, another state joins the program with designs inspired by its landscapes and culture. Today, 1/4 Idaho Goldback Gold Note Sets of 100 are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1/4 Idaho Goldback Gold Note Set contains 100 individual notes. The notes are packaged together with a black band and feature several security elements designed to help protect authenticity. These include UV-reactive design features, micro-printing details, and unique serial numbers assigned to each note.
Design
The obverse of the 1/4 Idaho Goldback Gold Note features the allegorical figure Justitia with Hells Canyon in the background. Hells Canyon formed as the Snake River slowly carved through the surrounding terrain over millions of years. Located along the IdahoOregon border, it is the deepest river gorge in North America, reaching a depth of approximately 7,993 feet. On Justitias belt are additional symbols tied to the state. These include the syringa, which is Idahos official state flower known for its clusters of small white blossoms, and the monarch butterfly. The monarch, designated as Idahos state insect in 1992, further reflects the natural environment of the region.
History
Justitia is the Roman allegorical figure representing Justice and is widely recognized in Western tradition. She is usually shown wearing a blindfold to represent fairness and impartiality in judgment. In her hands she carries balanced scales, which symbolize carefully weighing opposing viewpoints, along with a double-edged sword that represents the authority to carry out justice. The name Justitia comes from the Latin word meaning fairness and righteousness. Together, these symbols highlight the idea that justice should be delivered evenly and without bias.
