History

The S.S. Tilawa was carrying silver bullion valued at roughly $43 million in todays terms. The silver was intended for coin production in South Africa. The wreckage remained hidden for over 70 years until its discovery in 2014 and eventual recovery in 2017. Legal ownership of the silver wasnt resolved until a 2024 ruling from the UK Supreme Court granted rights to South Africa.
