Historic gold coins are an excellent option for the investor or collector looking to increase holdings in gold or capture historic coin designs. The 1 Ducat denomination was first issued as early as 1285 in Milan and other Italian provinces. The Netherlands began issuing its first ducats in the province of Holland. Today, you have the chance to purchase a Netherlands 1 Ducat Gold Coin online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The first 1 Ducat gold coins actually produced in the modern Netherlands actually came from the Holland province in 1583. However, these coins were based on the Hungarian ducat designs and weights. The first truly Dutch 1 Ducat Gold Coin was produced in 1586 by a number of different provincial mints. If you look closely at the end of the Latin legend inscribed around the outer rim on the obverse field, you will note a three- or four-letter legend that identifies the Dutch mint that originally produced the coin. This includes examples like ZEEL for Zeeland, FRIS for Friesland, and TRAN for Overijssel.
Obverse
A knight is featured on the obverse of Netherlands 1 Ducat Gold Coins. This figure stands looking to the right of the design field with a sword resting on his shoulder and a cluster of seven arrows in his left hand. An inscription around the outer rim of the design field reads Concordia Res Par Cres on most of the coins and is abbreviated Latin for the phrase Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt, which translates to English as Union makes small things grow.
Reverse
There is a square ornamental design on the reverse of Netherlands 1 Ducat Gold Coins that includes the decree that supports the issuance of this denomination. Again inscribed with Latin abbreviations, the full phrase translates to English as A coin of the provinces of the United Netherlands according to the law of the Empire.
History
Netherlands 1 Ducat Gold Coins are still produced today by the Royal Dutch Mint, but as bullion and proof coins only. The historic circulation versions featured 3.515 Grams of .986 gold content from 1586 to 1816, and 3.454 Grams of .983 gold content from 1817 until the end of circulation coin production.
