The US dime was one of the first three silver denominations suggested to Congress by Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury in United States history. Hamilton suggested the issuance of decimalized coinage consisting of a dime, cent, and mill equivalent, respectively, to 1/10, 1/100, and 1/1000 of a silver dollar. The dime is the smallest, thinnest US silver coin. Prior to 1965, all US dimes had 90% silver content. Provident Metals now offers a $1 Face Value allotment of 90% Silver Dimes for you to purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a bag of 10 US dimes!
  • Includes possible date marks from 1837 to 1964!
  • Contains .07234 Troy oz of actual silver content per coin.
  • Issued a face value of $.10 (USD) per coin by the government of the United States.
  • The obverse showcases either Liberty or President Roosevelt.

When you purchase the $1 Face Value 90% Silver Dimes in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive a total of 10 US dimes housed in a bag. This bag could contain 10 coins with the same designs and date marks or 10 coins with varying designs and date marks. We cannot guarantee the designs you will receive. It is likely that many of your coins will come from the Barber Coinage, Mercury Dime, or Roosevelt Dime design programs as these are the most recent coins produced in the US dime denomination.

Obverse

The obverse side of $1 Face Value 90% Silver Dimes features either an effigy of Liberty or the bust of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was added to the dime in 1946 following his death in office during his fourth term as President of the United States. He remains on the dime to this day. Other possible designs included the Adolph A. Weinman image of Winged Liberty from the Mercury Dime or the right-profile bust of Liberty from the Barber Coinage.

Reverse

On the reverse of most $1 Face Value 90% Silver Dimes, you will find the denomination, a fasces, or a torch. For example, the Roosevelt Dime uses a torch flanked by branches of oak and olive in its design. The Mercury Dime features a Roman fasces wrapped in an olive branch. Barber Coinage dimes had the denomination of One Dime surrounded by a wreath.

History

The US dime was introduced in 1796 with the Draped Bust design. This was used for just a decade until 1806 and eventually replaced by the Capped Bust image. These original coins had the heraldic eagle on the reverse. Seated Liberty was on the coin for 55 years with a wreath around the denomination on the reverse. The last coins in this denomination issued with 90% silver were the 1964 Roosevelt Dimes.
