For most of Americas early history, Liberty was the focal point of design for coins in circulation. Though much of the money issued today has images of former presidents, Liberty was the dominant figure through the middle of the 20th century. As tastes in design changed over time, so too did the image of Liberty found on American currency. Among the options still available to investors are former circulation 90% silver coins from the Barber Coinage. Today, you have the chance to get a $1 Face Value bag of 90% Silver Barber Quarters online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Charles E. Barber designed the image of Liberty used on the obverse of the Barber Coinage Series. His Liberty design was created in 1892 after nearly two decades of discontent in the US with the current designs featured on American coins. This discontent was driven, in large part, by the poor reception of the Morgan Silver Dollar design and the Liberty Head nickel. As Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Barber submitted designs in the early 1890s that were chosen for use on the dime, quarter, and half dollar.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 90% Silver Barber Quarters in this listing is a bust of Liberty in right-profile relief. She is accompanied by inscriptions of In God We Trust above her head, the date mark below the bust, and 13 stars. The stars are split on either side of Liberty with six to the left and seven to the right.
Reverse
The reverse face of 90% Silver Barber Quarters includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. Barber designed his own version of the heraldic eagle that featured the eagle looking to the left with a small US national shield on its chest. It clutches one large olive branch in its right talon and a cluster of arrows in its left talon. The 13 stars above its head are in a random cluster with a ribbon in its beak that reads E Pluribus Unum. The top rocker of the design field reads United States of America, while the bottom reads Quarter Dollar.
History
The 6th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Charles E. Barber served in this position from 1880 when the previous Chief Engraver died until his own death in 1917. Barber was part of a rare father-son duo to hold the post as his father, William Barber, had served as the 5th Chief Engraver before him from 1869 to 1880.
