Obverse

The obverse side of 90% Silver Barber Quarters bears the right-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Liberty is surrounded by inscriptions of In God We Trust, the date mark, and 13 stars representing the original colonies.

Reverse

On the reverse, 90% Silver Barber Quarters have a version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Barber modified it for this series with a bald eagle and the small US national shield. The eagle clutches an olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. There is also a loose cluster of 13 stars above the head of the eagle.

History

The Barber Coinage was created in response to the poor public reception of the design on the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Liberty Head Nickel in the 1870s and 1880s. However, Barbers design of Liberty still didnt live up to public expectations for the appearance of American currency. As such, all three coins eventually got new designs in 1916 with Winged Liberty on the dime, Standing Liberty on the quarter, and Walking Liberty on the half dollar.
