Each 1 Hades Silverback Silver Note is delivered in a protective plastic currency sleeve and carries a PPQ 70 grade. PPQ means Perfect Premium Quality, and 70 marks a flawless grade. With that designation, the note shows no handling under magnification, features precise centering, full margins, and paper that maintains its original look and feel. As the first release in the Legends of Olympus Series, this Hades edition begins a set honoring the Olympian gods of Greek mythology.
Design
On the obverse design of the Hades Silverback Silver Note, the god Hades stands in a stern stance as he holds the leash of Cerberus, keeping watch over his shadowy kingdom. The underworld, sometimes called Hades as well, was thought of as an enormous underground destination where all souls would eventually arrive after death, regardless of virtue or wrongdoing. Cerberus, the three-headed guardian dog, was believed to stand at the gate and make sure no one slipped back out.
History
Described in myths as having three dog heads, a snake-like tail, and in some versions snakes twisting from his mane or back, Cerberus was feared as an unbreakable barrier between the living and the dead. Still, a few famous heroes managed to overcome him. Orpheus quieted him with music, Heracles seized him as part of his twelfth labor, and the Sibyl used drugged honey cakes to put him to sleep so Aeneas could move beyond the gate.
